JUST IN: New academic research suggests a significant reduction in the quantum resources needed to solve the discrete logarithm problem on elliptic curves, the foundation of much of the security used in Bitcoin and other systems.

The result doesn't imply an immediate ECC (Elliptic Curvature) breakdown, but it does raise the relevance of the debate about how close we are to the post quantum threat ceasing to be theoretical.
The study estimates that a 256-bit prime curve could be attacked with 1,333 logical qubits, compared to 2,124 in a previous low width implementation.
