“Since Wednesday, ‘not publicly appearing’!’” Trump has been unusually low-key, “working nonstop” over the weekend—so much so that he didn’t even go to Mar-a-Lago.
As the 48-hour final deadline for Iran was drawing near and at a critical moment when a U.S. servicemember remained missing, President Trump unusually kept a low profile. He neither showed up in public nor, as he usually does, flew to Mar-a-Lago to spend the weekend, prompting widespread attention from the outside world.
According to Xinhua News Agency, on the 4th, U.S. President Donald Trump posted on social media, demanding that Iran reach an agreement within 48 hours or open the Strait of Hormuz. Trump said: “Remember I gave Iran a deadline of ten days—either reach an agreement or open the Strait of Hormuz? There’s hardly any time left—just 48 hours remain before all disasters befall them.”
According to a report by Forbes, since Wednesday Trump has gone several days without making any public appearances. His last public appearance was on Wednesday daytime, when he attended a hearing on a Supreme Court case about birthright citizenship, and that evening he delivered a televised televised Iran-war address to the nation. White House Communications Director Steven Cheung later posted on the X platform in response to outside speculation, saying that over the Easter weekend, Trump “kept working nonstop in the White House and the Oval Office.”
This unusual low-key approach came precisely at the moment when the situation was most tense: after a U.S. airman was shot down over Iran and still remained missing, the deadline of the U.S. 48-hour ultimatum to Iran was closing in step by step.
Unusually low profile, “shutting the gate” early from the White House
According to Forbes, Trump is expected to stay in Washington, D.C. this weekend and will not go to Mar-a-Lago in Florida as he normally would. The White House announced the “lid” (lid) at around 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, meaning that on that day Trump would basically have no public schedule.
Trump’s last public appearance was before Iran shot down the U.S. military aircraft on Friday. After that, whether it was the joint search-and-rescue operations that were launched immediately by both the U.S. and Iran, or even though the search work had not yet ended as of Saturday afternoon, he did not speak out publicly about it. He only briefly mentioned the matter during an NBC News interview on Friday, refused to disclose specific details of the search-and-rescue operation, and claimed that the incident would not affect peace talks with Iran.
Against the backdrop of this highly sensitive incident involving a missing U.S. airman, Trump’s public silence was especially striking. According to Forbes, so far he has made no formal public statements regarding search-and-rescue progress or any military response, relying only on social media posts to maintain a public presentation of a tough stance toward Iran.
By contrast, on Saturday he posted on Truth Social to reaffirm the 48-hour ultimatum, using forceful language as usual.
The White House’s proactive response itself reflects the scale of current public-opinion pressure. At present, as Iran’s deadline enters the final countdown, the outside world is closely watching what Trump will say next and whether he will formally speak out about the missing airman issue.
