I just saw a pretty interesting news story about Arkady Volozh. The founder of Yandex made a significant decision: he officially renounced his Russian citizenship. Bloomberg reported it recently on X, and honestly, it’s a move that marks an important turning point.
What’s striking is the context. Nearly two years ago, Volozh sold his stake in Yandex, Russia’s leading search engine. Since then, he has completely shifted focus to another direction: his Dutch company Nebius Group NV, which operates in the neo-cloud sector.
Arkady Volozh’s move reflects a clear transition. He is no longer tied to traditional Russian businesses but is now targeting international companies with a technological focus. It’s interesting to see how some entrepreneurs from the post-Soviet era are reinventing themselves and seeking new opportunities outside their home markets.
Volozh’s decision to give up Russian citizenship sounds like the closing of one chapter and the start of a completely different one. A move that probably many didn’t see coming, but makes sense given his recent trajectory in the international tech ecosystem.
