I have always been interested in Nick Szabo and his contribution to cryptocurrencies. Recently, I came across some facts worth sharing.
Nick Szabo is a computer scientist, lawyer, and cryptographer who truly changed the way we think about digital transactions. He is the one who coined the term and concept of smart contracts, which was a breakthrough for the entire industry. His idea was to apply advanced contract law to electronic trading protocols between strangers.
Interestingly, Nick Szabo graduated in computer science from the University of Washington in 1989, and then went further to earn a law degree. In 1998, he created BitGold, a project that was never fully completed, but everyone knows it was a direct predecessor of Bitcoin. Szabo explained that he wanted to solve the problems he saw in the traditional financial system.
But things get really interesting here. In 2014, Aston University conducted a linguistic analysis of Bitcoin's white paper and, based on language similarities, suggested that Nick Szabo could be Satoshi Nakamoto. Szabo of course denied this, saying he was misunderstood. Nevertheless, when asked by Elon Musk who might be Satoshi, Musk said he believed it was Nick Szabo. Musk added that Szabo seems responsible for the evolution of these ideas more than anyone else.
What surprises me is how few people know the history of pre-Bitcoin cryptocurrencies. David Chaum's ECash appeared even earlier than BitGold, and it was during that time that the first digital transactions took place. The history of crypto is more complicated than we think.
