In 2025, nationwide per 10,000 yuan GDP carbon dioxide emissions will decrease by 5.0%

The National Bureau of Statistics’ Statistical Communiqué on 2025 National Economic and Social Development, released on February 28, shows that China’s achievements in energy conservation and carbon reduction in 2025 were significant. According to preliminary estimates, after deducting energy use for raw materials and consumption of non-fossil energy, the energy consumption per 10,000 yuan of GDP fell by 5.1% year over year, and carbon dioxide emissions per 10,000 yuan of GDP fell by 5.0%. The communiqué shows that in 2025, China’s green and low-carbon transition produced notable results. The generation of clean energy such as hydropower, nuclear power, wind power, and solar power totaled 4,248.1 billion kWh, up 14.4% year over year. The output of new energy vehicles was 16.52M units, up 25.1% year over year; at year-end, the stock of new energy vehicles totaled 43.97 million units, an increase of 12.57 million units compared with the end of the previous year. Among 339 prefecture-level and above cities that were monitored, 72.6% of cities met air quality standards. Among 3,641 national surface water assessment sections, the proportion of sections with good water quality (Categories I–III) was 91.4%, Category IV was 6.9%, Category V was 1.1%, and below Category V was 0.6%.
