The government has taken a high level of interest in an incident in which a fare rebate machine operated by Kowloon Motor Bus (KMB) at Yau Chui Court in Sha Tin was temporarily shut down. KMB stated that it has immediately followed up, and the rebate machine has resumed normal operation.

The temporary suspension of the rebate machine will affect all passengers, including those who benefit from the “Two dollars, two discounts” scheme. The government has instructed KMB that it must promptly refund the fare rebate on a phased basis to affected passengers.

During the period when the rebate machine at Yau Chui Court in Sha Tin was malfunctioning, passengers who benefit from the “Two-Dollar Discount Scheme” were unable to recover their fare rebates, which will cause the government’s fare subsidy under the scheme to increase. The government emphasized that it will not refund KMB any additional fare subsidies resulting from this, and it will work closely with KMB to follow up on the detailed arrangements for the subsidy to safeguard public funds.

The government emphasized that as a public transport operator, KMB has a responsibility to ensure its systems operate normally. It urged KMB to seriously follow up to prevent similar incidents from occurring.
