The United States designates Iran as a "state sponsor of unlawful detention"

U.S. Secretary of State Rubio issued a statement on the 27th, listing Iran as a country “supporting illegal detention,” and urging U.S. citizens currently in Iran to leave Iran immediately. The statement calls on Iran to “immediately stop detaining hostages and release all Americans unfairly detained in Iran,” and says that if the Iranian side takes the above steps, the relevant designations and supporting measures may be terminated. The statement also urges U.S. citizens not to go to Iran for any reason, and again calls on U.S. citizens currently in Iran to leave immediately. If Iran does not stop the relevant actions, the U.S. side will consider taking further measures, including possibly imposing travel restrictions on those traveling to or via Iran using U.S. passports. On the 27th, U.S. President Trump said he was “not satisfied” with the progress of the current nuclear talks with Iran, but has not yet made a final decision on whether to launch a military strike against Iran. U.S. media reported that, as Rubio announced this information while the Trump administration is pushing for a new nuclear agreement with Iran and is threatening to take military action against Iran, it is the latest move to increase pressure on Iran.
