Ask AI · What political motives are behind the renaming of the Florida airport?

【Global Times report, reporter Li Ziyu】According to the U.S. “The Hill” reported, on March 30 local time, Florida’s Republican Governor Ron DeSantis signed a bill to rename the state’s Palm Beach International Airport as “President Donald J. Trump International Airport.”

Previously, on February 19, the Florida State Senate approved the bill to rename Palm Beach International Airport after President Trump. Democrats opposed the renaming move. U.S. Representative Lois Frankel, whose federal district is represented by the airport, said that the state legislature, controlled by Republicans, “ignored the voice (of the public) in Palm Beach County.” The White House declined to comment on the renaming.

The Hill said that if the bill received approval from the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration, the renaming of Palm Beach International Airport would take effect on July 1. The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration has not yet responded to the above news.

Palm Beach International Airport is not far from Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate. If it ultimately bears Trump’s name, it will be another major U.S. facility marked with a “Trump name imprint.” In December last year, the board of directors of the “John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts,” whose members were personally selected by Trump, voted to rename the center as the “Trump–John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.” It is an iconic cultural institution in Washington, D.C., and the renaming was strongly opposed by Democrats and the Kennedy family.
