【Caixin.com】 Over the past 40 years, men’s football has been one of the few areas in China that has failed to make progress. Professional sports are the most highly globalized industries, and China and Europe should strengthen cooperation in the field of football. On March 24, Jiang Xiaojuan, chair of the National Data Expert Advisory Committee, raised the above view during the 2026 annual meeting of the Boao Forum for Asia.

Before that, when mentioning how China and Europe could strengthen cooperation, Michele Geraci, former deputy minister of economic development in Italy, joked that, “If you’re in semiconductors, come to China; if you’re in football, stay in Europe.” These remarks were meant to remind foreign investors to understand the direction of China’s industrial policies.
