The Syrian Transitional Government port of entry and the General Administration of Customs announced on the 17th that two customs officials were killed that day in an attack by the extremist organization “Islamic State” in northern Syria’s Aleppo Governorate.

According to reports by Syrian state television, the Aleppo Governorate commander of the Ministry of Interior’s security forces, Mohammed Abdul Gani, said that a customs patrol was ambushed by armed “Islamic State” personnel while patrolling in the Safira area of the governorate, resulting in the deaths of two people, while another two were injured.

Gani said that after the incident, the Ministry of Interior’s security forces immediately stepped in and exchanged gunfire with the armed “Islamic State” personnel. One militant detonated a suicide bomb and died; there were no casualties among the security forces. The Ministry of Interior is continuing its operations to track down the suspects who are still at large.

According to Syrian media reports, on February 21 this year, the “Islamic State” issued a statement saying that Syria had been “occupied by Turkey and the United States,” and that the group had begun “a new round of operations” in Syria. (Xinhua News Agency)
