In February 2026, new car sales in the Portugal automotive market reached 20,541 units, up 5.5% year over year, with cumulative growth of about 10% over the first two months.

Demand has not really exploded, but against the backdrop of interest rates stabilizing and electric vehicle penetration increasing, the market is gradually warming up.

Chinese automakers: Not bad performance

Chinese brands are still in an early stage in Europe, but their growth rate is extremely strong:

◎ MG: 866 units, +187.7% year over year, 4.2% share, already entering the mainstream camp

◎ BYD: 467 units, +32.7% year over year, expanding steadily

◎ XPeng: 119 units, +98.3% year over year, validating a premium intelligent route

◎ Lingling/Leapmotor, Omoda, Jaecoo, and others have begun entering the market

◎ Dongfeng, Deepal, and others also achieved small-scale breakthroughs

MG scales up, BYD follows a path of technology + branding, XPeng pushes into the premium intelligent segment, while other brands are testing the channels.

Brand landscape

In February, traditional brands remained strong and stable, while new-energy players accelerated their penetration. The TOP 10 brands in order were:

◎ Peugeot (2,425 units, 11.8%)

◎ Mercedes-Benz (1,453 units)

◎ BMW (1,295 units)

◎ Opel (1,282 units)

◎ Nissan (1,189 units)

◎ Citroën (1,167 units)

◎ Tesla (1,160 units)

◎ Volkswagen (1,131 units)

◎ Renault (1,056 units)

◎ Toyota (947 units).

◎ Tesla surged 112.1% year over year, becoming one of the fastest-growing mainstream brands;

◎ “value-for-money brands” such as Opel and Citroën show a clear recovery;

◎ Renault and Toyota, meanwhile, experienced declines to varying degrees.

The TOP 10 models in February were as follows:

◎ Peugeot 2008 (1,052 units, +39.9%)

◎ Tesla Model 3 (845 units, +104.6%)

◎ Opel Corsa (670 units)

◎ Nissan Qashqai (669 units)

◎ Mercedes-Benz A-Class (501 units)

◎ Nissan Juke (473 units)

◎ Citroën C3 (469 units)

◎ Peugeot 308 (428 units)

◎ Renault Clio (395 units)

◎ Jeep Avenger (373 units)

Tesla Model 3 saw explosive growth. Compact cars (Corsa, Clio, C3) remain strong, while SUVs (2008, Qashqai, Avenger) are the core growth drivers.

Summary: Electric vehicle sales in Southern Europe are truly quite good.
