Just realized a lot of people are still struggling with updating their SASSA details, especially if you're on different grant types. Let me break this down because it's actually different depending on what you're receiving.
If you get permanent grants (old age, disability, child grants), you literally have to go in person to your nearest SASSA office—no shortcuts. Bring your ID, proof of your new bank account (bank statement not older than 3 months or an official letter), and they'll process a Payment Method Change Form. It takes up to 21 working days for the bank to verify, so submit before the 15th of the month if you want it to kick in next cycle. Same thing if you need to update your phone number—call 0800 60 10 11 or just visit the office.
Now, if you're on the SRD grant (that R370 emergency relief), it's way more digital. You go online to the SASSA SRD portal, enter your ID, and they send you a secure SMS link. Click it, update your bank details, done. Same process for when you need to change your phone number on SRD—use their contact details page, enter your ID and Application ID, put in your new number, they send an OTP to verify. Pretty straightforward actually.
One thing though: make sure whatever account you're updating is in your name only. SASSA won't pay into joint accounts or anything like that. And if the online portal gives you grief, just call them or go in person. Definitely stick to official links though—there's sketchy websites out there pretending to be SASSA. Not worth the risk.
