Today is Lifeguard Day in Argentina, and the story behind it is quite powerful. It all started on February 4, 1978, at Playa Grande, Mar del Plata, when Guillermo "El Chino" Volpe, a 22-year-old lifeguard, was on duty. He saw a teenager drowning and without hesitation began rescue maneuvers with his colleagues. They managed to save the boy, but when returning to the shore, El Chino did not appear. Four days later, his body was found lifeless. The autopsy determined it was a heart attack.

Since then, every February 4, Volpe is remembered at the monument in Playa Grande. But the date is more than that, you know? It’s to recognize all those who do this profession. A lifeguard is not just someone sitting there watching. It’s constant training, full attention throughout the shift, quick decisions under pressure. They have to anticipate risks, act within seconds when every move counts. Safety and health phrases in the workplace take on real meaning in their daily routine: protection, prevention, ongoing responsibility.

The interesting thing is that many times you don’t see them in action because they do their job well. Constant vigilance prevents tragedies before they happen. They are physically and mentally prepared, combining professional judgment with vocation. Thanks to that rigorous training and those safety and health phrases that guide their profession, they inspire confidence at beaches, rivers, and pools.

It’s easy to forget they’re there when everything seems calm, but that’s exactly the key. A lifeguard cares even when no one notices, and that deserves recognition. So if you know one, today is a good day to say thank you for their daily dedication and commitment to saving others’ lives.
