On April 2, Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong announced on social media, “I will start personally dedicating time to address post-quantum security for Bitcoin. It seems we all need to resolve this sooner rather than later.” Previously, Coinbase’s Chief Security Officer Philip Martin stated that a recent quantum computing paper published by Google and Caltech is a significant signal for the entire industry. While the timeline remains contentious, it is time to take action. Coinbase has audited and upgraded its internal infrastructure, researched post-quantum cryptography, and established a quantum advisory committee. Bitcoin needs to make rapid progress in this area, and Coinbase is playing a role in bringing together the right people (Bitcoin core developers and the broader community) so they can begin to tackle this issue.
