Hey, does anyone know what phase the moon is in right now? Because I recently checked the calendar, and last March the moon was pretty interesting. On March 5th, it was in a waning gibbous phase, almost fully illuminated at about 95%, with 16 days into its cycle. That stage comes after the full moon and before the last quarter, when it still looks almost full but starts to lose light.
The good thing is that in Mexico, it was very clear to see from most of the country. And if you wanted to observe the surface details of the moon closely, those days were ideal because the shadows were very pronounced, and the craters and mountains were more visible. On March 11th, it was the last quarter, when only the left half is illuminated.
Lunar phases always follow the same order: new moon, waxing, first quarter, waxing gibbous, full, waning gibbous, last quarter, and waning. Each week, something visible changes if you observe the night sky. What phase the moon is in right now depends on the day, but honestly, following the lunar calendar helps understand how the illumination evolves each night. Do you also check the moon, or is it just a few of us?
