Do you know that fear of running a red light and getting a fine? Well, the people who commit this violation are subject to a very serious fine. According to the Brazilian Traffic Code, running a red light is classified as a very serious infraction and costs no less than R$ 293.47 in fines, plus 7 points on your CNH. That’s quite a lot, you know?

The worst part is that these points add up quickly on your record. There are other types of infractions as well – minor violations cost R$ 88.38 with 3 points, medium violations are R$ 130.16 with 4 points, and serious violations are R$ 195.23 with 5 points. But running a red light is really one of the worst. There are some situations where it’s okay to pass, like when there’s a sign to turn right, or when an ambulance with siren passes by. But outside of those cases, you really have to stop.

The ( radars ), those 'speed cameras' , are always watching. They capture an image of your car when you cross the line after the light turns red. Many people don’t know, but they also record if you stop on the crosswalk. The best thing to do is to stay alert when you see the yellow light and slow down. To check if you have any pending fines, just visit the National Traffic Department’s portal. Paying quickly can give you a discount, so don’t delay. Running a red light isn’t worth it — it’s expensive and also affects your driving rights.
