Remember the times when mastering Blender seemed like an achievement that required months of diligent study? Now, that's history. Over the past couple of years, neural networks have integrated so deeply into 3D graphics that the entry barrier has practically collapsed. Now anyone can generate a 3D model from a photo using a neural network in just a few minutes right in the browser. I decided to see how far the technology has come and tested several popular services. I chose a classic theme for the experiment—characters from childhood cartoons. It's a great way to see how algorithms handle recognizable images and convey details we've remembered for years.
The selection criterion was simple: honest free access without card linking or hidden subscriptions. Here's what I found.
Tripod AI was the first service I tried. It's a cloud platform that works directly in the browser and allows you to upload a finished picture or simply describe the character in text. The main advantage is that the system understands Russian perfectly, so you don't have to struggle with translations. After registration, they give you 300 coins; one generation costs 25 units, so roughly 12 attempts. On version 2.5, they even give five ready-made models as a gift.
When I uploaded a photo of Scrooge McDuck, the neural network processed it in a minute and a half. The result was quite good—the character is instantly recognizable, and the coloring is on point. However, the glasses were a bit off, and for some reason, the eyes were duplicated on the beak. But for a quick experiment, it’s a decent level. In the settings, you can choose the generation style, specify negative prompts, and even set a pose. Bonus— for 20 coins, you can animate the character, adding running or jumping motions.
Meshy was more interesting. It works with images or text and immediately provides four options to choose from. After registration, it gives 100 coins, enough for 10 models. Generation takes a couple of minutes. The main feature is the Texture Generator function, which adds textures to a gray draft for an additional 10 coins. Under the hood, diffusion models trained on huge libraries of objects are used. You can download the result in GLB or OBJ format and open it in Blender or Maya.
When I tested generating a 3D model from a photo of Donald Duck, the result was somewhere in the middle. The character remained recognizable, but it’s not the kind of work you'd want to view in 4K. There were issues with textures—white patches where the neural network didn't quite reach. The hand looked thicker than the other, and the number of fingers varied. The pose was slightly off, and the sense of motion was lost. It’s good enough for a rough sketch, but for a final project, serious manual editing will be necessary.
Trellis is a Microsoft development available for free on Hugging Face. It only works with images; text prompts are not understood. But it offers plenty of settings: seed, strength of adherence to the original, number of steps. The main feature is the Multiple Images mode. Uploading several frames of a character from different angles helps the neural network better understand the shape of the object. For flat cartoon drawings from old cartoons, this is a real lifesaver.
Gini from Luma Labs focuses on speed. You describe an object in text, and the system turns words into a 3D model in two minutes. It immediately outputs four options that you can rotate directly in the browser. There are no limits on generation attempts, so you can experiment endlessly. But there's a catch—only text prompts, no image uploads. It handles inanimate objects well, but faces and small details often turn out blurry. Export options are convenient—the system automatically selects the appropriate format depending on where you'll work next.
When I tried creating Ariel through a text description, the result was weak. Textures were misaligned, details blurred, and the geometry was sometimes distorted. You can recognize the character, but that’s about it. This tool clearly isn’t suitable for complex organic characters.
HighTemp positions itself as a tool for highly detailed models. The developers focus on texture quality and clean polygonal meshes. It works with text and images, with a minimalistic interface. Generation takes a couple of minutes. Export to standard formats—GLB, OBJ. It’s good when you need not just a rough shape but a model with a decent appearance.
When I uploaded a photo of a character from a classic cartoon, the result was one of the best in the entire review. The character closely resembles the original, and the model is decent, although the color needs some work—the original looks more saturated.
Masterpiece X emphasizes text descriptions. The image function works poorly. Upon registration, you get 250 credits for five attempts. It has an integrated Sculpt editor where you can tweak the shape directly in the browser. If you don’t like the colors, switch to Paint mode and manually color or run automatic texture enhancement. The model is prepared for transfer to other editors—they generate UV maps and apply materials themselves.
When I tried creating a Genie, the result was mediocre. Moderate detail, textures look like rough drafts. The neural network didn’t follow instructions very well— instead of a classic Genie, I got a character suspiciously resembling Will Smith from the movie. Instead of a magic lamp, there's a cauldron in his hands. The coloring leaves much to be desired.
After all the tests, it’s clear: professional 3D designers can still sleep peacefully. Neural networks are not yet ready to take over the work anytime soon. Getting something truly worthwhile with a single click is like trying to draw a masterpiece with your eyes closed. You’ll have to try again and again, change images, rewrite prompts. And free attempts tend to end just when you start to understand how the algorithm works.
The truth is, neural networks are only good when managed by a human. Without a creative eye, ideas, and the skill to refine the model in an editor, they remain just a set of tools. They can produce a standard shape, but only you can breathe life into a character and make it unique. Technology is an assistant that saves time on routine tasks.
