Choosing motorcycle insurance can be really challenging, right? Even for the same insurance, the premiums and coverage details vary greatly between companies, and the conditions change depending on whether your bike is 125cc or over 250cc. Many people wonder, "Which one is actually cheaper?" and "Will I get proper coverage?"
Recently, I conducted a thorough comparison of 8 popular motorcycle insurance products. When looking at four key points—coverage breadth, initial response in case of an accident, the quality of roadside assistance, and affordability—it became clear which insurance options stand out. Especially important is whether the insurance can reliably cover damages to others and injuries to yourself, and whether you can leave all post-accident procedures to the insurer.
For those riding bikes under 125cc, AXA Direct’s "Motorcycle Insurance" is a top candidate. Its annual premium of ¥42,130 for 125cc bikes is notably affordable. The roadside assistance is comprehensive, with unlimited towing and coverage for overnight accommodation costs, which is a big plus. It also offers unlimited liability coverage for personal injury and property damage, along with 24-hour accident support, providing peace of mind. Just keep in mind that for bikes over 250cc, the price jumps significantly.
If you often travel over 100 km by motorcycle, Aioi Nissay Dowa Insurance’s "Safety Touring" is worth considering. The premium is slightly higher, but it offers unlimited towing, and it also covers travel and accommodation expenses. It’s a strong choice for long-distance riding.
Sompo Japan’s "Motorcycle Insurance (SGP)" is ideal for those who frequently rent bikes. It automatically includes a "rental bike driving" clause, so accidents while riding a rented bike are covered. The coverage is comprehensive, with 24/7 support and good initial response reputation. However, the premium tends to be above average.
For riders of bikes over 250cc, options expand. Tokio Marine & Nichido’s "Motorcycle Insurance (TAP)" offers significantly lower rates for bikes over 250cc. If your riding is mainly local, it’s probably sufficient. AIG Insurance’s "Motorcycle Insurance" also offers a competitive rate of ¥42,710 for 250cc bikes.
If theft coverage is a priority, Nisshin Fire & Marine Insurance’s "Adult Motorcycle Insurance" is the only choice. While the premium is higher, it provides extensive support, including towing over 200 km, and coverage for up to ¥50,000 in travel expenses and ¥30,000 for accommodation costs.
If cost is the most important factor, Zurich’s "Super Bike Insurance" offers an incredible rate of just ¥19,200 for 125cc bikes. However, accident support is limited to until 8 PM, so it’s best suited for daytime riders. Mitsui Direct General Insurance’s "Strong and Gentle Motorcycle Insurance" is also cheaper than average across all models, but it has a support cutoff at 7 PM.
When choosing motorcycle insurance, it’s best to consider your riding style, typical travel distance, and bike displacement. Judging solely by price can lead to trouble when you actually need coverage. Be sure to check the coverage details and support systems carefully to find the insurance that best fits your needs.
