Xinhua News Agency, New York, March 31 (Reporter Shi Chun) New York City Mayor Zohrahan Mamdani announced on March 31 that the city has decided to allow the short-form video social media platform TikTok to be used again on government electronic devices.

That day, Mamdani posted a message on the social media platform saying, “TikTok, we’re back.”

According to AP, a memorandum provided by the mayor’s office of New York shows that the city government allows each department to publish content on the social media platform. The purpose of this policy change is to expand the reach of information dissemination by the New York city government. The memorandum says, “We hope to open up a new channel for communication with the public and help deliver the information that New Yorkers need.” At the same time, the memorandum requires that the operation of official accounts by each department must comply with a series of security precautions, including using dedicated devices that do not handle sensitive data, and assigning specific personnel to manage the accounts.

Since the end of 2022, the U.S. federal government and multiple states have ordered bans on using TikTok on government electronic devices, citing so-called “data security.” The then mayor of New York, Eric Adams, issued a similar ban in 2023.
