Just finished reading through some investigative pieces on what went down in late February around Operation Epic Fury, and honestly, the whole thing reads like a masterclass in how modern warfare actually works now—except nobody's really talking about the infrastructure underneath.



Here's what struck me: this wasn't just another military operation. It was basically an AI stress test in a live war zone. The entire thing hinged on compressing what military people call the sensor-decision-shooter loop into minutes, sometimes seconds. Whoever cracks that compression owns the next decade of geopolitical leverage.

Let me break down the players because this is where it gets interesting.

OpenAI basically went from "we don't do military stuff" to becoming what might be the Pentagon's most expensive SaaS subscription in like two years. Sam Altman announced they'd inked a deal to deploy GPT models on classified networks for intelligence analysis, translation, combat simulations. The public red lines sound reasonable—no mass domestic surveillance, humans stay in the loop on lethal decisions. But here's the thing: feeding satellite imagery, signals intelligence, social media streams into these models and having them sort targets, predict movements, assess risks? That's basically a battlefield brain. And it's apparently worth hundreds of millions.

Anthropoic went the opposite direction. They held firm on stricter ethical boundaries during Pentagon negotiations and got absolutely demolished for it. The Defense Secretary literally branded them a "supply chain risk"—the same label previously used for Chinese tech companies. That label basically meant military contractors had six months to rip Claude out of their systems. The message was crystal clear to everyone watching: don't push back on what the Pentagon wants.

But here's where the real power sits: Microsoft and Google. If the AI companies are the brains, these two are the actual central nervous system. Without their cloud infrastructure, all those models are just PowerPoint slides.

Microsoft Azure saw Israeli military machine learning usage spike by 64 times in just a few months starting in late 2023. They're running data volumes equivalent to the entire Library of Congress. It's being used to transcribe communications, process surveillance data, and work with local systems to auto-generate target lists. Microsoft took some heat and reduced certain services, but the core military AI contracts kept running.

Google's Project Nimbus is even more politically loaded—$1.2 billion in cloud infrastructure to Israel since 2021. Employees have been protesting it for years. The infrastructure supports battlefield simulation, intelligence fusion, complex target planning. Google keeps saying it's not for offensive military use, but everyone in the industry knows that's the core functionality.

Now, here's where it gets genuinely unsettling. Israel's been running systems like Lavender, Gospel, and "Where's Daddy" that essentially automate target identification at scale. Lavender mapped behavioral patterns on almost every adult male in Gaza, assigned "militant scores" on a 1-100 scale, identified 37,000 suspected targets. Gospel marks buildings for bombing. "Where's Daddy" tracks when targets go home with their families to maximize casualty impact. Human review apparently takes like 30 seconds per target.

The terrifying part? The technical logic of these systems is portable. If you have communication data, location trajectories, social networks from any region, you can theoretically translate that same algorithmic killing factory logic to any target set. Some analysts think that's exactly what happened during Epic Fury—Gaza-style algorithmic warfare scaled up to Tehran.

From a market perspective, what's happening is wild. You've got this new AI-Cloud-Defense complex forming where the traditional tech vs. defense stock binary doesn't apply anymore. The companies willing to negotiate on ethics are getting the massive contracts. The ones holding firm on principles get branded as security risks and frozen out. Meanwhile, the cloud giants are absorbing most of the actual cash flow while sitting on increasingly massive reputational and regulatory time bombs.

The incentive structure here is brutal: when contracts go to whoever's most "aligned with national security," ethical red lines become a competitive disadvantage. That's not just a business problem—that's a systemic problem that every future entrepreneur and investor just learned the hard way.

And here's the thing that keeps me thinking about this: Epic Fury might just be the prologue. Whether the next conflict is in the Taiwan Strait, Eastern Europe, or somewhere else in the Middle East, the pace of war won't be determined by tank counts or artillery anymore. It'll be determined by models trained on petabytes of classified data and cloud infrastructure connected to thousands of GPUs.

Before we keep outsourcing more kill chains to a handful of model and cloud companies, someone needs to seriously answer who's actually responsible when algorithmic recommendations become bombing coordinates. Because right now, that question seems to be getting systematically avoided.
