Hey, I just read that Uber and Bolt drivers in Lagos recently went on strike. It turns out the AUATON union organized a 3-day protest because the drivers are working crazy hours and the platforms aren’t even moving with the current rates. Commissions are around 30% plus VAT, can you imagine? The union filed 10 very specific demands: a minimum base fare, reducing those crazy commissions, driver insurance, passenger verification. Basically, they say they can’t even survive with what they’re earning now, given the high fuel costs and everything else. What’s interesting is that this time the union set up a serious operation to ensure the strike is followed through, with coordinators at airports and high-traffic areas. In previous strikes, they always fell apart after the first day, but it seems they’re taking this seriously this time. The union also said that if there’s no response from the companies, they might extend the action. Honestly, I don’t know if it will work, but at least they’re putting real pressure on them.
