The guy was literally running this anonymous MAGA account to amplify the same White House messaging from his official position. Phone records and publicly available data connected Wade directly to the Johnny MAGA account, and sources confirmed the connection. Wade didn't respond to Wired's requests for comment, which honestly tells you everything.

This isn't even new territory. Using sock puppet accounts to create fake grassroots support has been happening for years. Fox News got caught doing this back in 2013 to counter online criticism. Then there was @BasedMikeLee - looked like an independent supporter of Senator Mike Lee until it turned out to be the senator's personal account the whole time.
