Just realized I needed to update my SASSA details and honestly, it's not as straightforward as you'd think. If you're on a permanent grant like disability or old age, you can't just do it online - you have to physically go to your nearest SASSA office with your ID and proof of your new bank account. They'll have you fill out a Payment Method Change Form, and then it takes up to 21 working days for the bank to verify everything. The catch is you need to submit before the 15th of the month if you want it to take effect that same month, otherwise it rolls over.
Now if you're getting the SRD grant (that R370 relief), it's actually way easier - you can handle the whole thing online through their portal. You enter your ID number, they send you a secure link via SMS, and you update your bank details from there. Takes a few days to a couple weeks for verification. Just make sure whatever account you're using is in your name only - they won't pay into joint accounts or anything like that.
For your cellphone number, same deal: permanent grants require a visit to the office or calling the helpline at 0800 60 10 11, but SRD lets you update it online through their contact portal. You'll get an OTP sent to your new number to verify. Heads up though - there are fake websites out there pretending to be SASSA, so always use the official portal if you're changing your SRD details. Trust me, dealing with SASSA is easier when you know exactly what to bring and what to expect.
