IPL 2026: Commentator Ian Bishop's Research On GT Pacer Ashok Sharma's Background Wins Praise
(MENAFN- AsiaNet News)
During the IPL clash between the Punjab Kings and the Gujarat Titans in Mullanpur, former West Indies pacer turned commentator Ian Bishop impressed fans with his in-depth research about GT pacer Ashok Sharma’s background during the live broadcast on Tuesday, March 30.
The fourth match of the IPL 2026 saw the Punjab Kings defeating the Gujarat Titans by three wickets. With a 163-run target, the PBKS chased it down with five balls to spare in the final, with Australian batter Cooper Connolly playing a match-winning knock of 72 off 44 balls, including 5 sixes and as many fours, at a strike rate of 163.64.
Apart from Connolly, the opener Prabhsimran Singh contributed with an innings of 37 off 24 balls, including four sixes and a four, followed by skipper Shreyas Iyer’s 18 off 11 balls, helping PBKS cross the finish line and secure a thrilling three-wicket win over the Gujarat Titans.

Bishop’s Research on Ashok Sharma’s Background
Ian Bishop, who has been in broadcasting duties since 2000, two years after retiring from his international career, was on the air during the IPL 2026 clash between the Punjab Kings and Gujarat Titans. The former West Indies pacer stood out with his detailed insights about Ashok Sharma’s background and his cricketing journey.
During GT pacer’s third over of his spell against PBKS, Bishop highlighted how Ashok rose from humble beginnings in Jaipur’s Rampura to earn his IPL debut, while also mentioning the sacrifice of his elder brother, Akshay, who had to quit cricket to support his family financially, allowing Ashok Sharma to pursue his cricketing dream.
“Ashok Sharma comes from Rampura, a small village in Jaipur. They are two brothers, both played at the district level. Due to financial issues, only one could afford to play the game. His elder brother, Akshay, sacrificed for his brother, and today Ashok is playing IPL. His family should be so proud of him watching him play for GT,” Bishop said on air.

This was not the first time Ian Bishop highlighted the cricketing journey and background of a player. During the IPL 2026 opener between the defending champions, Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Sunrisers Hyderabad, the former West Indies pacer highlighted Aniket Verma’s journey, revealing that he lost his mother at a young age and was raised by his uncle, who supported his cricketing dream.
Bishop even spoke about PBKS’ star performer, Cooper Connolly, highlighting how his parents recognized that cricket was his true calling despite his interest in AFL, while also mentioning Xavier Bartlet, noting that his long arm was shaped by swimming before his father encouraged him to take up cricket seriously.
