Guangdong severe convective weather causes some high-speed rail flights to be delayed; heavy rain, gusts, or up to level 12 wind gusts may occur locally today and tomorrow.
Yesterday (March 29), severe convective weather hit multiple places across Guangdong, causing some high-speed rail services to be temporarily suspended and multiple flights to be canceled. In today and tomorrow, Guangdong will still see heavy downpours and severe convective weather. In some areas, thunderstorms may bring 8 to 10 level damaging wind gusts and hail. Locally, there may be torrential rain, with wind gusts reaching around 12 levels. Residents should take the relevant precautionary measures. On the day after tomorrow, rainfall in Guangdong will weaken significantly.
△ On the 29th, due to thunderstorm strong winds, trees were broken in the Nanhai District of Foshan.
Yesterday, severe convective weather affected many parts of Guangdong. From 15:00 to 16:00, Guangzhou recorded hourly rainfall of over 50 millimeters. In the northern part of Maoming, the northern part of Yangjiang, the central and northern part of the Pearl River Delta, Shaoguan, and Qingyuan, there were winds of 8 to 10 levels, with localized winds reaching 12 levels. The strong winds caused debris to stick to the high-speed rail overhead contact wire. The Guangzhou South to Foshan West section of the Nanning–Guangzhou High-Speed Railway and the Guangzhou–Guiyang High-Speed Railway was suspended. At Baiyun Airport, multiple flights were diverted for thunderstorms or canceled.
The Guangdong Meteorological Service forecasts that in today and tomorrow, Guangdong will still experience prominent severe convective weather. From west to east, there will be intense precipitation, thunderstorm winds of 8 to 10 levels, hail, and other severe convective conditions. Locally, there may be wind gusts of around 12 levels or tornadoes. In Maoming, Yunfu, northern Guangdong, and cities and counties along the Pearl River Delta, there will be heavy rain to rainstorms, with localized torrential downpours. In the other cities and counties, there will be thunderstorms with moderate rain, with localized rainstorms.
△ City forecasts across Guangdong.
On the day after tomorrow, rainfall in Guangdong will weaken significantly. It is expected that in cities and counties in the north of northern Guangdong, it will be partly cloudy turning to scattered light rain. In the other cities and counties, it will be cloudy to partly cloudy with light rain, with some areas seeing moderate rain.
Meteorological authorities remind that Guangdong has entered a season with frequent severe convective weather and heavy rainfall. In today and tomorrow, there will still be severe convective weather. The public should pay attention to warnings issued in the near term, try to avoid going out during periods of severe convective weather and heavy rainfall, and do a good job of protection against lightning, hail, strong winds, and so on. Prevent secondary disasters caused by localized heavy rainfall, such as urban and rural waterlogging, flash floods, and landslides.
