Have you seen the number of memes floating around out there? It seems that this February 14th, people decided that memes are the best way to celebrate, especially those of us who are single. From Jason Voorhees wishing everyone a happy Valentine’s Day (because last Friday the 13th left him inspired), to the classic ones about not receiving love messages or surprise breakfasts. Honestly, memes have been the collective therapy for everyone who decided to stay home sleeping with their pets or going out drinking alone.

The good thing is that we’re not alone in this. There are memes about people buying themselves gifts, about crying while watching cute couples on social media, and of course, tributes to unconventional saints: Saint Valentine Elizalde and Juan Gabriel, who has literally been named "The Patron Saint of Those Who Were Not Born to Love." That song by the Divo of Juárez became an anthem for the occasion.

But well, while we enjoy the memes and laugh at the situation, it’s interesting to know that all of this has a long history. Back in the 3rd century, in Rome, Emperor Claudius II banned marriages because he believed that single men made better soldiers. A priest named Valentine disagreed and continued secretly marrying couples until he was caught. He was sentenced to death on February 14th, 270 AD, and that’s why we celebrate this day today. So basically, we’re remembering someone who dared to challenge authority for love. Not a bad story for a day full of memes, right?
