Australia signs memorandum of understanding with Anthropic to undertake national AI program capacity building

**Viewpoint Network News: **On April 1, the Australian government and the U.S. AI startup Anthropic signed a memorandum of understanding. This is the first arrangement under Australia’s National Artificial Intelligence (AI) Plan, aimed at helping strengthen capacity building and ensure the responsible development of innovation.

According to the introduction, the agreement is a high-level agreement, not legally binding, and sets expectations that align with Australia’s national interests. Based on information compiled from public sources, Anthropic is a U.S. AI startup. Its products include the AI chatbot tool Claude.

Under the agreement, Anthropic will share research findings regarding the capabilities and risks of emerging AI models, participate in joint safety assessments, and conduct collaborative research with Australian universities to help track the application of AI across the entire economy and its impact on workers and employment.
