The Environmental Bureau announces the weekly trend of fuel prices for oil companies every Wednesday.
To help the public monitor changes in motor fuel prices, the Environmental Protection Department, starting from today, will publish each week the 7-day moving average retail prices of unleaded petrol and diesel at retail outlets of each oil company after deducting store discounts, together with the market indicator price trends for international refined petroleum products for the same period. The relevant information has been uploaded to the Environmental Protection Department’s website.
The Environmental Protection Department said that crude oil and refined petroleum products are different commodities, and movements in international crude oil prices may not necessarily be synchronized with adjustments to retail prices of motor fuel. In its trend charts, the Environmental Protection Department uses market indicator prices for international refined petroleum products and compares them with retail prices of motor fuel to help the public monitor the trends of local retail prices of different oil companies and international refined petroleum product prices, including whether they move in tandem and the gaps between them. In addition to showing the retail list prices of motor fuel, the trend charts also show the retail prices at each oil company after deducting store discounts—i.e., the prices after immediate discounts offered when fuel is purchased at the store. The public can compare the average levels of advertised prices among different oil companies and choose the oil company with more favorable pricing. However, the trend charts do not calculate or include other discounts that are only offered to designated customers and not available to all customers, such as credit card discounts or discounts for oil company points cards.
The Environmental Protection Department said that it will publish the trend charts for the past week every Wednesday afternoon. If Wednesday is a public holiday, the charts will be published on the next working day. The Government will continue to closely monitor geopolitical developments, international energy price trends, and the state of local fuel supply to safeguard Hong Kong’s stable energy supply.
