An oil tanker was attacked by missiles near the northern coast of Qatar.
Iran’s attacks on commercial vessels in the Gulf region have continued to escalate, with the scope of impact now extending to Qatar’s territorial waters.
According to CCTV News, on April 1 local time, the Qatari Ministry of Defense confirmed that Qatar that day was subjected to an attack by three Iranian cruise missiles. Qatar successfully intercepted two of them, while the third missile hit an oil tanker berthed in Qatar’s northern territorial waters that was leased by Qatar Energy. Qatari authorities immediately evacuated all 21 crew members aboard the vessel, with no casualties reported.
Qatar Energy subsequently issued a statement confirming that the company’s leased tanker—Aqua 1—was attacked by a missile in Qatar’s northern territorial waters at around early that morning. All crew members on board were uninjured, and the incident had no impact on the environment. At present, no organization has claimed responsibility for the attack.
After the attack occurred, oil prices did not show any obvious fluctuations. Influenced by signals from both the U.S. and Iran indicating a ceasefire, oil prices today fell significantly.
This attack on a Qatar Energy tanker is the latest incident in the recent wave of blows to commercial shipping in the Gulf region. Just one day before the incident, Kuwait Oil Company confirmed that a Kuwaiti oil tanker loaded with crude oil was attacked by Iran at anchor in the Port of Dubai. The hull caught fire and sustained damage, and all 24 crew members were safely evacuated.
Since February 2026, when the United States and Israel carried out strikes against Iran, commercial vessels across the Gulf region and along the Strait of Hormuz have continued to be targeted by missiles, drones, and explosive boats. The affected waters include the near seas of the United Arab Emirates, Oman, and Saudi Arabia. Several vessels caught fire or suffered structural damage during the attacks, but most incidents did not result in casualties.
