【Caixin Media】 Over the past 40 years, men’s soccer has been one of the few areas in China that has failed to achieve meaningful progress. Professional sports are among the most globalized industries, and China and Europe should strengthen cooperation in the field of soccer. On March 24, Jiang Xiaojuan, the chair of the National Data Expert Advisory Committee, raised the above view during the 2026 annual meeting of the Boao Forum for Asia.

Before that, when discussing how China and Europe can strengthen cooperation, Michele Geracci, the former deputy minister of Italy’s Ministry of Economic Development, joked that, “If you’re in semiconductors, come to China; if you’re in soccer, stay in Europe.” These remarks are intended to remind foreign investors to understand the direction of China’s industrial policy.
