I took a look at the per capita GDP figures for 2025, and it's really striking to see the gap between the poorest economies and the rest of the world. The poorest countries are concentrated in Sub-Saharan Africa, with South Sudan at the top with just $251 per person. It's crazy when you think about it.
Looking at the list, we see that Yemen, Burundi, and the Central African Republic make up the top three of the most impoverished nations with $417, $490, and $532 respectively. Even countries like the DRC, Niger, and Somalia, which one might think are at the bottom of the scale, are still above these figures.
What really interested me was seeing where it stops. India is at the bottom of this list of the 50 poorest countries with $2,878, just ahead of Ivory Coast. This really shows the extent of global economic disparities. The gaps between these poorest economies and developed countries are simply enormous.
