A few years ago, an incident occurred that still sparks controversy within the crypto community, and many prefer not to recall it. One of the prominent figures in the DeFi space, co-founder of MakerDAO, Nikolai Mushegian, was found dead in Puerto Rico in October 2022. The strange part is that just a few hours earlier, he had posted a rather concerning message on Twitter, discussing intelligence agencies, human trafficking networks, and conspiracy theories.
Local authorities quickly closed the case, stating there were no signs of violence. They found dangerous currents at the beach where Mushegian was discovered, which explained everything. He had a small wound on his head, but no other injuries. The official narrative was accidental drowning, nothing more.
But then things got interesting. People who knew him, including other crypto billionaires, began to question the official account. Some hinted it might have been suicide, while others outright said the story didn't add up. Everyone who knew him said Mushegian was very smart, but he had mental health issues. That was also a common reason many used to end the discussion.
However, online speculation didn't stop. The crypto community, as usual, started connecting some seemingly unrelated dots—timing of tweets, investigation speed, and suspicious details. Now, years later, the case of Nikolai Mushegian remains a controversial topic within the community.
We don't know what the truth really is. Official investigations tell one story, the crypto community tells another. The only thing we know for sure is that we lost someone who made significant contributions to the development of decentralized finance. That is what we should remember. 6666
