【ANA】 All Nippon Airways' international low-cost carrier Air Japan ceased operations at the end of March.
Japan’s largest airline, All Nippon Airways (ANA), has ended operations for its international low-cost carrier AirJapan at the end of March. Due to factors such as the war, AirJapan’s “journey” has come to an end.
AirJapan was established in February 2024. ANA saw an opportunity in the post-pandemic demand from visitors from Asian countries traveling to Japan, and launched the AirJapan low-cost brand for short- and medium-haul international routes. It converted three Boeing 787 aircraft previously used by ANA, allowing passengers to pay extra for services such as meals.
After AirJapan began operations, it ran three routes: Tokyo Narita to and from Seoul in South Korea, Bangkok in Thailand, and Singapore. In total, there were 4,124 flights, carrying about 969,000 passengers.
However, because the Russia-Ukraine war has continued, for safety reasons ANA has, to this day, still avoided Russian airspace for its flights. This has lengthened the journey and flight time, requiring more aircraft and flight attendants to maintain scheduled service. In addition, manufacturers have delayed aircraft deliveries, and there has been a shortage of engine parts, limiting the number of aircraft available. As a result, about two years after AirJapan started operations, it suspended flights.
ANA decided to concentrate resources on long-haul flights and retain two brands: ANA and Peach Aviation. The aircraft and crews that originally belonged to AirJapan were taken over by ANA.
