Guangzhou’s heavy rain draws attention

Multiple places including Guangzhou, Shenzhen, and Zhuhai have issued urgent reminders

Stop outdoor activities and work immediately

Severe convection + dense fog + heavy rain + strong winds

Four warnings issued at once

  • Severe convective weather yellow warning: In parts of 7 provinces and regions including Zhejiang and Guangdong, thunderstorms and strong wind of grade 10 or above may occur in some areas

The National Meteorological Center continues to issue a severe convective weather yellow warning at 10:00: It is expected that from 14:00 on the 30th to 14:00 on the 31st, some areas in the eastern part of the southwest region, the eastern and southern parts of the Jiangnan region, and the central-northern parts of South China, among others, will experience thunderstorm gusts or hail with winds of grade 8 or above. In particular, in parts of southern Hunan, southern Jiangxi, northern and southern Zhejiang, northern Fujian, southeastern Guizhou, northern Guangxi, northern Guangdong, etc., thunderstorm gusts of grade 10 or above may occur, with maximum wind speeds reaching above grade 11.

  • Heavy rain blue warning: 6 provinces have heavy rain to very heavy rain

The National Meteorological Center continues to issue a heavy rain blue warning at 10:00: It is expected that from 14:00 on the 30th to 14:00 on the 31st, in parts of northern and eastern Guangxi, the central-northern parts of Guangdong, southern Hunan, southern and eastern Jiangxi, western Fujian, and the southwestern parts of Zhejiang, among others, there will be heavy rain to very heavy rain. In parts of northeastern Guangxi and northern Guangdong, very heavy rain may occur.

  • During the Qingming holiday, these places will also see heavy rain

From April 2 to 4, in parts of the eastern southwest region, the Jianghan area, the southern Jianghuai region, Jiangnan, South China, and the southeastern part of the Tibet region, among others, there will be light to heavy rain or downpours. In parts of Jiangnan and the northern parts of South China, very heavy rain may occur locally, accompanied by strong short-term downpours, thunderstorms with strong winds, or hail and other severe convective weather.

From April 5 to 7, in the Jianghan area, Jiangnan, South China, and also areas such as eastern Chongqing and eastern Guizhou, there will also be moderate to heavy rain, with local episodes of downpours or very heavy rain. In some areas, severe convective weather such as strong short-term downpours and thunderstorms with strong winds may occur. This round of the “precipitation + severe convection” process will affect the Qingming holiday. Friends in the areas mentioned above should arrange travel plans reasonably, and pay attention to the forecasts and warning information for the coming days.

Monitoring: The production of warning information begins with a “sky-air-ground” integrated 3D monitoring network. Meteorological departments use observation equipment such as meteorological satellites, weather radars, and automatic weather stations to capture atmospheric changes 24 hours a day without interruption. Massive real-time data, such as winds, pressure, humidity, temperature, and precipitation, are continuously collected.

Forecasting: Based on these data, forecasters conduct comprehensive analysis using models such as numerical forecasting models and artificial intelligence algorithms, and combine historical data and real-time evolution trends to judge the possible time, location, intensity, and impact range of disasters.

Warning: When it is judged that disasterous weather such as high temperatures, heavy rain, or severe convective conditions is about to occur, and it meets warning standards, the relevant meteorological stations will create corresponding meteorological disaster warning signals or risk warnings.

Release: At the earliest opportunity, the warning information is sent via the “National Emergency Warning Information Release System,” and through SMS, instant messaging flashes, and telephone channels targeting people responsible for emergency response at all levels, as well as through channels for the public such as radio and television, new media, village loudspeakers, electronic display boards, etc.

After the public receives a warning signal

What should they do?

How should different color warning signals be handled?

For blue and yellow warning signals, they mean that a disaster may occur, or it has already occurred and the impact is gradually worsening. During this time, the focus is on “preparation and prevention”—keep an eye on weather changes in time, take response measures in advance, and try to avoid going to dangerous areas.

When an orange or red warning is issued, it means that the disaster has already caused or is about to cause a serious threat, and the highest level of protective measures must be taken.

Warning signals ≠ “Just take a wait-and-see approach”

In daily life, the public should also build a risk awareness. Don’t ignore disasters just because they are “rare,” and don’t become complacent because they are “familiar.” You must deeply recognize that high-level warning signals are action directives for risk avoidance. Once you receive a warning, you must immediately initiate protective measures—not “wait and see.” Be the first person responsible for disaster prevention for yourself and your family; don’t wait for others. Master key risk-avoidance skills and trust official warning information.

Disasterous weather such as thunderstorm strong winds, hail, and heavy precipitation

also easily triggers disasters such as flooding
