Venezuela Restores Embassy in U.S.
(MENAFN) Venezuelan officials announced on Saturday that the government has formally reclaimed its embassy in the United States.
Venezuela’s Vice Foreign Minister for Europe and North America, Oliver Blanco, stated on social media platform X that he, together with Venezuela’s head of mission to the U.S., Felix Plasencia, successfully regained control of the embassy, which will now be renovated to serve Venezuelan citizens.
Diplomatic ties between Venezuela and the United States were severed in January 2019 over Washington’s interference in Venezuelan internal affairs, prompting the withdrawal of all U.S. embassy personnel from Caracas by March 2019. In response, the U.S. established the Venezuela Affairs Unit in Bogotá later that year to continue diplomatic functions.
Tensions escalated in early 2026 when U.S. military forces launched an operation against Venezuela on January 3, forcibly detaining President Nicolas Maduro and his spouse before transporting them to New York. By the end of the month, on January 31, a U.S. diplomatic mission arrived in Caracas, resuming official contacts between the two nations.
