On March 31 local time, OpenAI announced that it has completed a $122 billion funding round, with a post-investment valuation of $852 billion, setting the global record for the largest private equity financing.

This round was led by Amazon ($50 billion), Nvidia ($30 billion), and SoftBank ($30 billion), with follow-on investment from firms including a16z and D.E. Shaw. Microsoft continues to add to its investment, and for the first time has raised $3 billion from individual investors via banking channels.

OpenAI said that within one year of ChatGPT going live, the company’s revenue reached $1 billion. By the end of 2024, the company had achieved $1 billion in quarterly revenue. Today, monthly revenue has reached $2 billion.

Earlier, on February 27, OpenAI announced a new investment at a valuation of $730 billion, raising $110 billion. The disclosed investors at the time included: SoftBank with $30 billion, Nvidia with $30 billion, and Amazon with $50 billion. Amazon said that based on its existing multi-year agreement worth $38 billion with OpenAI, OpenAI and Amazon Web Services (AWS) would add another $100 billion over an 8-year period of cooperation.

The financing announced today has been completed as an add-on on top of the earlier funding.
