Recently, a senior high school student at Bao’an High School in Shenzhen wrote a letter requesting the “removal of the bird’s nest,” saying he couldn’t tolerate the loud noise from the “cuckoos” and felt it was “disrupting his studies.” The principal did not simply accept the request. Instead, through an open letter to the student, he gave a “life education lesson,” hoping the student would understand that the ultimate goal of education is not to make the world accommodate us, but to help us learn how to get along with the world. Many netizens praised the principal’s approach, saying, “This is truly what education means.” Others said the senior student faces great pressure, so they could understand his request.

On March 27, the school’s Party secretary and principal Yuan Weixing issued his latest response. He said he had already contacted the student who wrote the letter right away and bought him earplugs. At the same time, he believes that, as the principal, he has a responsibility to correctly guide students to think. He wrote: “Behind this, there is actually a common issue. Today someone complains about bird calls; tomorrow someone else complains about frogs, cicadas, a dorm roommate’s voices, the sound of an air-conditioner outdoor unit in the classroom, and even a proctor’s walk in the gaokao exam room could become, for him, a so-called disruption. As the principal, I have an obligation to guide students to understand that the world will not pause for one person because of something.”

A former classmate of the senior student who wrote the letter also responded to netizens’ concerns on his personal account. He said, “Thank you, Principal, for your careful guidance, and thank you to netizens for their patient replies. It has given me new thoughts about life and nature.” Many netizens left warm messages under the classmate’s post, saying, “You’re amazing—daring to speak up with your own voice,” and “Wishing you a smooth gaokao.”
