Nine departments propose that by 2028, the scale of the core Internet of Things industry will surpass 3.5 trillion yuan.

Xinhua News Agency, Beijing, March 31 (reporters Tang Shining and Zhou Yuan) Reporters learned on March 31 that nine departments, including the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, recently jointly issued the “Action Plan to Promote Innovative Development of the Internet of Things Industry (2026–2028),” which proposes that by 2028, more than 50 advanced and applicable standards will be developed and revised, 10 application areas with billion-level connections and 15 application areas with ten-million-level connections will be cultivated and built, the number of Internet of Things terminal connections will strive to reach a hundred-billion-level scale, and the scale of the Internet of Things core industry will break through 3.5 trillion yuan.

The Internet of Things is based on sensing technologies and, through communication networks, enables ubiquitous intelligent connectivity among people, machines, and things, bridging the digital world and the physical world. The Internet of Things industry mainly consists of sensing, networking, platforms, applications, and security assurance.

The action plan makes clear that it will promote innovative development of the Internet of Things industry through five major measures: driving innovation and upgrading of Internet of Things devices, improving the service effectiveness of Internet of Things platforms, cultivating Internet of Things application scenarios, strengthening the network foundation of the Internet of Things, and fostering an ecosystem for Internet of Things industry development. This will further accelerate the comprehensive integration of Internet of Things technologies into all fields of production, consumption, and social governance, promote deep integration of the digital economy and the real economy, and support the development of new-quality productive forces.

The action plan also proposes that by 2028, new technologies, new products, and new business models for the Internet of Things will continue to emerge, the industry’s innovation capability will be continuously enhanced, key technologies such as sensing, networking and communications, data processing, and security will achieve breakthroughs, and the level of intelligence in terminals and platforms will be significantly improved.
