Guterres: Appointed Middle East envoy to engage in "direct contacts" with Iran

On the evening of March 26 local time, Iran’s Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian (Hossein Amir Abdollahian) spoke by phone with UN Secretary-General António Guterres. In the call, Abdollahian said that the current unsafe situation in the Strait of Hormuz is a direct consequence of the United States and Israel’s aggressive acts. As a coastal country, Iran has the right to prevent hostile countries and their allies—along with ships belonging to or associated with them—from passing through. Guterres said in the call that the earlier appointment of French diplomat Jean Arnault as the UN special envoy for the Middle East issue was intended to engage in “direct contact” with the Iranian side.
