After Petróleo Brasileiro S.A. (Petrobras) conducted drilling operations at the MarlinSul oilfield in the Campos Basin, it discovered the presence of oil and gas beneath the salt layer.

The discovery was made at the 3-BRSA-1397-RJS well, which is located approximately 113 kilometers from the coastline, in water depth of 1,178 meters, near the city of Campos–Goytacazes.

The company said that, based on the results of wireline logging, oil and gas shows, and fluid sampling, it has confirmed the oil-bearing interval. The samples will be sent to a laboratory for analysis to further determine the reservoir and fluid characteristics, and to support subsequent evaluation of the area.

Petrobras said: “The drilling operation has been completed safely, complies with health, safety, and environmental requirements, and respects the environment and personnel.”

The company added that its operations in the Campos Basin are intended to replenish reserves in this mature producing basin, and to support Brazil’s energy needs during the energy transition.

The MarlinSul oilfield was discovered in 1987, and Petrobras, as the operator, holds a 100% operating interest in the asset.
