The UK will publish a review report on political financing regulations, which is expected to ban cryptocurrency donations.
ChainCatcher message: According to a report by the UK’s The Guardian, the UK government will officially publish today a review report on UK political funding regulations, including measures to strengthen safeguards against foreign funding (including cryptocurrencies) intervening in democracy.
Previously, Nathan Gill, the former leader of the Reform Party in Wales, was sentenced to 10 and a half years for accepting bribes in the form of cryptocurrency. The core content of the report is expected to include a ban on political parties accepting cryptocurrency donations, on the grounds that cryptocurrencies are anonymous and difficult to trace, and could be used by other countries to evade existing rules and interfere with elections in the UK. The Labour government plans to incorporate the findings of the review into the upcoming Elections and Democracy Bill, in order to comprehensively tighten oversight of political donations.
