BEIJING, March 20 (Xinhua) – In a statement on March 20, a spokesperson for the Ministry of Commerce said that China has repeatedly urged Mexico to correct its erroneous practices of imposing unilateral additional tariffs, and expressed serious concern over Mexico’s so-called “economic security review” of Chinese investment that may take place.

A reporter asked: According to local media reports in Mexico, when a senior official of Mexico’s Ministry of Economy was interviewed, he said that the U.S. had accused Mexico of being used as a “transshipment hub” for exporting Asian goods to the United States, and that the U.S. was pleased to see Mexico impose additional tariffs on products such as automobiles and steel imported from non–free trade partners. Mexico is considering conducting a “economic security review” of Chinese investment. What comment does the Ministry of Commerce have on this?

The spokesperson said that China has noted the relevant remarks made by a senior official of Mexico’s Ministry of Economy. China has consistently opposed various forms of unilateralism and protectionist measures, and opposed politicizing, weaponizing, or using economic and trade issues as tools. China has repeatedly urged Mexico to correct its erroneous practices of imposing unilateral additional tariffs, and expressed serious concern over Mexico’s so-called “economic security review” of Chinese investment that may take place. The Ministry of Commerce launched a trade and investment barrier investigation on September 25, 2025 into Mexico-related restrictions concerning China. The final conclusions of the investigation will be announced soon, and corresponding measures will be taken in due course to firmly safeguard China’s legitimate rights and interests.

The spokesperson said that mutual respect and win-win cooperation are valuable experiences in the development of China–Mexico economic and trade relations, and the normal development of bilateral economic and trade relations requires both sides to move toward each other. China is willing to work with Mexico to strengthen communication and exchanges, properly manage differences, and jointly maintain the overall situation in bilateral economic and trade relations. China hopes Mexico will take a rational, objective, and comprehensive view of economic and trade cooperation with China, respect market rules and the principles of fair competition, and provide an open, fair, and predictable environment for enterprises in all countries, including Chinese enterprises.
