Recently, I’ve been testing APIs and found that the SMS platform really saves effort. While buying a new SIM card is the most stable option, sometimes convenience is more important, so I did some research. Basically, SMS platforms are services that rent virtual numbers to receive SMS messages, available both domestically and internationally, used for account registration or testing verification code APIs.

I’ve used quite a few unreliable ones—some take half a day to receive messages, others have outrageous delays. Later, I compiled a few decent options: SMS-Activate and 5SIM are two international services that are fast, usually arriving within 10 seconds, and cover many countries. If you’re using a Chinese SMS platform, Super Cloud SMS and Little Bird SMS have decent experiences—US numbers typically take 10-30 seconds, domestic numbers are even faster, around 5-20 seconds. Getsmscode is cheap and suitable for light use.

When using these services, be aware that shared numbers are often already registered, and less common apps may have delays. It’s recommended to have several numbers ready so you can switch quickly if one becomes invalid. Some platforms support one-click number switching, which is really practical. If you’re just testing APIs, choosing any API-supported number is enough, but for stable registration on overseas websites, it’s best to top up multiple numbers.

By the way, these tools are meant to protect privacy and avoid spam—definitely don’t use them for illegal activities. If there’s an issue, you can try a number from a different country or simply refresh and get a new one. Based on my experience, SMS-Activate and 5SIM perform the most reliably—they’re fast, have wide coverage, and are the most hassle-free to use.
