Recently, I've been experimenting with overseas account registration and API testing, and I found that virtual number platforms are truly a lifesaver. I used to be bothered by this a lot—buying new SIM cards was too troublesome, and using real numbers risked privacy leaks. Later, I discovered the existence of SMS verification platforms.

In simple terms, a virtual number platform is like renting a temporary virtual phone number to receive SMS verification codes. You don't have to worry about spam calls or exposing your real number, making it especially suitable for account testing or registering on overseas websites. The platforms usually charge per use, some also support monthly subscriptions, and you can discard the number after use—very convenient.

I've tried many virtual number platforms myself. Some are really garbage—SMS never arrives or arrives after half a day. Eventually, I found a few decent ones. SMS-Activate is the most used; verification codes arrive incredibly fast, usually within 10 seconds, and it covers almost all countries. 5SIM is also good; its interface is clean, and the API documentation is very clear. You can normally register on Google, Twitter, and other sites.

If you're mainly testing within China, SuperCloud SMS and XiaoNiao Verification are more handy. SuperCloud SMS's US number responses typically take 10 to 30 seconds, and Chinese numbers are even faster—though sometimes they get stuck during peak times. XiaoNiao Verification's domestic numbers usually receive SMS within 5 to 15 seconds, offering good value. There's also Getsmscode, which is a bit less popular but cheaper and suitable for light use.

A few tips when using virtual number platforms: some numbers are shared and may have been registered before; verification SMS can sometimes be delayed, especially on less popular platforms; it's best to choose reputable platforms and avoid being cheap; never use virtual numbers as your primary long-term number, as privacy isn't guaranteed. My experience is, if you're just testing APIs, any platform supporting API access is enough. But if you need stable registration on a specific overseas site, it's best to prepare several numbers so you can switch immediately if one becomes invalid.

When you don't receive SMS, usually switching to a different country number or refreshing the page helps. Sometimes the target platform blocks certain virtual number ranges. Some virtual number platforms support one-click number switching, which is very useful. Overall, SMS-Activate and 5SIM perform the most reliably—they have low latency and wide country coverage. I mainly use these two now.
