Recently, a piece of research news from Inner Mongolia has attracted attention. The new mineral discovered by the Baotou Steel Group Mining Research Institute—Xianhuaite-(La)—has officially been approved by the International Mineralogical Association Commission on New Minerals, Nomenclature and Classification (IMA-CNMNC) and assigned the international number IMA2025-087. This discovery marks the addition of a new member to the family of new minerals from the Baiyun Obo deposit, bringing the total number of new minerals to 29.

As a globally renowned rare earth resource base, the mineral research of the Baiyun Obo deposit has long attracted the attention of the international scientific community. The newly approved Xianhuaite-(La) belongs to the niobate mineral category, and its crystal structure contains both lanthanum (La) and niobium (Nb) as key metal elements. The research team at the mining institute completed the full process from mineral discovery to international recognition over several years through systematic sampling, precise analysis, and the application of modern mineralogical research methods. Experts from the International Mineralogical Association noted that the discovery of this mineral provides an important sample for studying the mineralization mechanisms of rare earth-niobium coexisting deposits.

According to researchers, the naming of Xianhuaite-(La) reflects both the characteristics of the mineral’s composition and the significance of scientific inheritance. The term “Xianhua” in its name is derived from the name of a well-known scholar in the field of mineralogy in China, highlighting the researchers’ tribute to the academic contributions of their predecessors. The crystal morphology of this mineral under an electron microscope presents a unique plate-like structure, and chemical composition analysis shows that its lanthanum to niobium ratio has significant characteristics, providing new perspectives for subsequent mineral classification research.

The discovery of new minerals in the Baiyun Obo deposit began in the mid-20th century, and after several generations of researchers’ continuous exploration, a complete research system has been established. The approval of this new mineral not only enriches the global mineralogy database but also provides a new theoretical basis for the comprehensive utilization of rare earth resources in China. The Baotou Steel Group Mining Research Institute stated that it will continue to deepen the study of the material composition of the Baiyun Obo deposit, striving to achieve more breakthroughs in areas such as the occurrence state of key metal elements and mineralization laws.
