To understand what zk is in practice, the classic example “Alibaba’s Cave” will help us:
Imagine a round cave with two entrances (A and B) and a secret door in the middle. The prover (P) knows the magic spell to open the door, while the verifier (V) wants P to prove that P truly knows the magic spell.
The process is as follows: V stands outside the cave. P enters from a random entrance (A or B). V asks P to come out from the other entrance. P uses the magic spell (if needed) and exits from the entrance V requests. Repeat the process many times.
If P truly knows the magic spell, P will always exit from the correct entrance. If P doesn’t know, the probability is only 50%. After many repetitions, V will believe that P knows the magic spell—without needing to know what it is.
ZK-SNARKs vs ZK-STARKs — Two Distinct Technology Branches
Today, there are two main types of Zero Knowledge Proofs widely applied in Blockchain:
ZK-SNARKs (Zero-Knowledge Succinct Non-Interactive Arguments of Knowledge) are non-interactive proofs. The prover only needs to send a single proof to the verifier. ZK-SNARKs have the advantage of small, efficient proof sizes and easy verification, but they require an initial “trusted setup.”
