Multiple cities in the United States have seen large-scale protests against President Donald Trump, marking the third nationwide major protest in the past 10 months. Protesters claim their goal is to combat authoritarian rule, asserting that up to 8 million people participated.

Among the anti-Trump “No Kings” protesters are elected officials and community leaders who shouted defiant slogans, holding homemade signs condemning issues such as the Iran war, threats to voting rights, and large-scale deportations by the White House. The organizers of “No Kings” claim that 8 million people participated, making it one of the largest protests in recent years.

One of the largest rallies took place outside the Minnesota State Capitol, where singer Bruce Springsteen performed his song “Streets of Minneapolis,” created in response to the crackdown on immigrants. Many protesters stated that federal immigration officials have been creating turmoil locally for months, forcing them to take to the streets in protest.

32-year-old citizen Ayar believes that life over the past few months has been a living hell, stating that he now carries his passport with him whenever he goes out. Attendees said they feel that Minnesota has not returned to normal since the immigration actions began, but the turnout last Saturday (28th) gave them a sense of relief.

Some protesters in the capital Washington marched to a military base, the residence of Stephen Miller, the White House deputy chief of staff responsible for pushing the large-scale deportation efforts, where the crowd shouted, “Miller must resign!” At smaller gatherings in Richmond, Kentucky, participants waved American flags, and drivers honked their horns in support.

While immigration policy was the focus of previous “No Kings” protests in Atlanta, last Saturday’s demonstration shifted attention to the Iran war, the impacts of partial government shutdowns on air travel, and the tightening voting rules being pushed by Republicans.

Protesters across the country also protested against the Trump administration’s overreach on issues including healthcare and environmental protection. Organizers of the protests indicated their intention not to present a single specific demand but rather to unite various forces to express a range of dissatisfaction with Trump and his policies.
