As the developer protection debate heats up, senators defend the CLARITY Act.
The co-founder of Tornado Cash, Roman Storm, was convicted for operating an unlicensed remittance service, intensifying an important regulatory debate in Washington. Senator Cynthia Lummis and attorney Jake Chervinsky engaged in a public dispute over the Digital Asset Market Clarity Act. Chervinsky argues that certain wording in the current draft of the bill could still classify non-custodial software developers as remittance providers, imposing KYC obligations on them and undermining the protections it aims to offer. Senator Lummis countered that recent bipartisan revisions to Chapter Three have made it the strongest legal protection for DeFi developers, urging the passage of the bill. However, the specific text of the revisions has not been made public, making independent verification impossible.
