U.S. Navy Commits USD448M to Enhance Shipbuilding Using AI
(MENAFN) US Navy Secretary John Phelan unveiled a $448 million strategic funding initiative Tuesday aimed at the Shipbuilding Operating System (Ship OS), designed to fast-track artificial intelligence and autonomous technology integration throughout America’s maritime manufacturing sector.
“This investment provides the resources our shipbuilders, shipyards and suppliers need to modernize their operations and succeed in meeting our nation’s defense requirements,” Phelan said.
“By enabling industry to adopt AI and autonomy tools at scale, we’re helping the shipbuilding industry improve schedules, increase capacity and reduce costs. This is about doing business smarter and building the industrial capability our Navy and nation require,” he added.
The US Navy’s Maritime Industrial Base (MIB) Program will spearhead the program alongside Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA), according to the announcement.
Ship OS will unify fragmented information streams from disconnected enterprise platforms, outdated databases and live operational data sources to pinpoint manufacturing delays, optimize engineering processes and enable proactive risk identification.
The substantial capital injection represents Washington’s commitment to revitalizing domestic naval construction capabilities through cutting-edge digital tools, positioning American shipyards to meet escalating defense demands while enhancing efficiency and cost-effectiveness across the maritime supply chain.
