The Middle East tension suddenly escalated.

On March 28 local time, the Israel Defense Forces stated that they had detected a missile launched from Yemen towards Israel. According to Israeli media reports, the Houthis in Yemen launched a ballistic missile at southern Israel on the 28th, marking the Houthis’ “entry into the war.”

At the same time, the latest statement from Iran also drew high attention from all parties. On March 27 local time, Ibrahim Rezaei, spokesperson for the Iranian Parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Committee, stated that continuing as a signatory of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons is of no benefit to Iran, “it is time to withdraw.”

Houthis “entering the war”

On March 28, according to Xinhua News Agency, the Israel Defense Forces issued a statement on the 28th saying they had detected a missile launched from Yemen towards Israel. According to Israeli media reports, the missile has been intercepted.

The Times of Israel reported that the Houthis in Yemen launched a ballistic missile at southern Israel that day, marking the Houthis’ “entry into the war.”

The report stated that alarms sounded in southern Israeli towns. This is the first attack by the Houthis on Israel in the current conflict.

The Houthis stated on the 27th that in the context of the ongoing escalation of tensions in the Middle East, the organization has set three conditions for its possible military intervention, warning that if the pre-set situations occur, they will take military action directly.

Houthi spokesperson Yahya Saree issued a statement late that night via the Houthi-controlled Masirah TV, saying that if the Red Sea is used to launch military operations against Iran or other Islamic countries, if new regional or international coalitions join in supporting the U.S. and Israel’s actions against Iran and its regional allies in the “Axis of Resistance,” and if military escalation against Iran and the “Axis of Resistance” continues to expand, the Houthis could directly enter the war.

Saree simultaneously demanded that the U.S. and Israel immediately cease their aggressive actions against Iran and the countries related to the “Axis of Resistance.” He stated that these military actions are “unjust and unreasonable,” endangering regional and global security and stability, and negatively impacting the world economy.

He also called for an end to the blockade of Yemen and warned that any further exacerbation of the blockade against Yemen would be met with countermeasures, and the Houthis “are prepared to respond to any developments.” Saree also urged the implementation of humanitarian assistance commitments included in the ceasefire agreement for the Gaza Strip.

Houthi leader Abdul-Malik al-Houthi reiterated the organization’s opposition to U.S.-Israeli aggression against Iran on the 26th, stating that the organization will not remain neutral in the current situation and will “act proactively with confidence” if the situation requires.

CCTV News reported that currently, the war that began in the Middle East is rapidly spreading globally, with spillover effects becoming increasingly evident. The U.S. and Israel’s threats to strike Iranian energy infrastructure and airstrikes on strategic locations for Iranian oil exports, as well as the Bushehr nuclear power plant area in southern Iran, combined with shipping disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, have led to a continuous rise in international oil prices and severe turmoil in the global energy market.

Additionally, since the outbreak of the war, the spillover of risks has led to temporary closures of airspace in multiple Middle Eastern countries and numerous flight cancellations. This regional war has already become a significant risk point affecting global economic and security stability.

Iran considers “withdrawing from treaties”

On March 28, according to Xinhua News Agency, Ibrahim Rezaei, spokesperson for the Iranian Parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Committee, stated on the 27th that continuing as a signatory of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons is of no benefit to Iran, “it is time to withdraw.”

Rezaei stated on social media that the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons has failed to protect Iran’s nuclear facilities from attacks, and relevant international documents and agreements have been completely ignored. Rezaei reiterated that Iran has no intention of developing nuclear weapons, and this policy has not changed.

He stated that the U.S. has withdrawn from over 60 international organizations and treaties, and if Iran chooses to withdraw from the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, the West may express surprise and opposition, but “now is the time to leave.”

International Atomic Energy Agency Director-General Grossi stated on March 2 that no evidence of a systematic nuclear weapons manufacturing program in Iran has been found. The U.S. and Israel’s choice to attack Iran may be politically motivated.

Earlier, the Israel Defense Forces stated that they had conducted airstrikes on Iran’s Arak heavy water reactor, claiming that the target was “key infrastructure used to produce weapons-grade plutonium.” The Israeli Air Force had previously struck this not-yet-fully-completed nuclear facility during the conflict in June 2025.

The IDF stated that they later discovered that Iran had “made multiple attempts to rebuild the facility,” and therefore conducted further strikes. Under the comprehensive agreement reached in 2015 regarding Iran’s nuclear issue, the facility was subsequently redesigned, and the reactor core was dismantled and filled with concrete. However, the IDF stated that even in its current state, the heavy water facility “could still serve as a source of neutrons needed for nuclear weapons.”

The news of the attack on Iran’s Hondayb heavy water reactor was first released by Iranian sources. The Deputy Governor of Political Security in Iran’s Central Province stated that the Hondayb heavy water complex had been attacked in two phases by the U.S. and Israel. The attacks did not cause any casualties, and due to the necessary safety precautions taken in advance, there is currently no risk of contamination to the surrounding area’s residents. It is reported that during the “12-Day War” between Israel and Iran in June 2025, the Hondayb nuclear facility was also attacked by the IDF.
